The best and brightests minds of the planet could be found in the conference: from the old school represented by luminaries like Dr Campbell, Dr Laherrer and Dr Hall, to the upcoming young geniuses, who preferred to be called by their first names: Chris, Luis, Rembrandt. The consensus was gloomy: this was the greatest danger ever faced by this planet, and there were heated discussions about what the best course of action might be. The same had happened on the previous conference, but this time there was one novelty: a young girl with very big eyes that looked at everything with endless fascination. Whenever she had a chance, she talked about the computer model she had developed in her free time, that could be used to determine the best path of action for the planet. And the scientists listened, the old and the young alike. Dr Hall asked if her model took into account his concept of EROEI, she confirmed that it was at the backbone of it. Impressed by what she was saying, he insisted she should pursue further education and develop the model further. The girl was so gobsmacked that she couldn't find an answer to that.
She pondered at the scientists' reaction once back home, in the derelict spaceship she had for a home.
